Giants rally with three runs in the ninth for 6-4 win

The San Jose Giants rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning to post a 6-4 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Friday evening in the opener of a three-game series. In front of 2,749 fans at John Thurman Field, John Bowker's RBI double off of the fence in right field proved to be the game-winning hit before Joe Bateman worked a perfect bottom of the ninth inning for the save. San Jose won their sixth consecutive game and improved their overall record to a season-high tying 23 games over .500 (67-44).

Trailing 4-3, the Giants opened the top of the ninth inning with a Guillermo Rodriguez single up the middle. After Jake Wald sacrificed the runner to second with a bunt, Clay Timpner stepped to the plate and singled into shallow center field. Rodriguez raced around third base and scored just ahead of the throw from Modesto center fielder Seth Smith to tie the game at 4-4.

Timpner took second base on the throw to the plate and then immediately scored the go-ahead run when the next batter, Bowker, connected for his double to deep right field. Bowker eventually scored when Nate Schierholtz lined a two-out single into left field.

Jason Waddell was credited with the victory after firing a perfect seventh and eighth innings. The left-hander, who struck out four batters during his stint on the mound, improved to 4-0 on the season. Bateman then came on in the ninth and retired the Nuts in order on a ground out and a pair of strike outs.

The Giants scored their first run of the game in the top of the third inning when Wald blasted a solo homer to left field. For Wald, it was his third home run in his last four games and 13th overall this season.

Down 4-1, the Giants plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Modesto lead down to one run. With runners on first and second and one out, Bowker lined a single into left field to load the bases. Eddy Martinez-Esteve followed with a bloop single into right field scoring two runs to make the score 4-3.

Timpner (2-for-5, RBI) and Bowker (2-for-4, 2B) had multi-hit games at the plate. Starting pitcher Jesse Floyd did not figure in the decision after allowing three earned runs (four total) in six innings. Floyd did not walk a batter while he struck out eight. As a whole, the Giants pitching staff finished with no walks and 14 strike outs on the evening.

With the win, the Giants are now three games ahead of Modesto (63-46) for the top overall record in the North Division.
