Garthwaite ties league record in 16-2 win

(Adelanto, CA) - Jay Garthwaite collected five hits and tied a California League record with four doubles in the game as the JetHawks beat the High Desert Mavericks 16-2 on Friday night at Mavericks Stadium. The win snapped a four-game losing streak and improves the JetHawks record to 18-24 in the second half and 55-57 overall on the year.

Lancaster scored five runs in the top of the first inning to jump out to an early lead in the game. Garthwaite doubled with the bases loaded to drive home three of the runs in the frame.

The JetHawks added two runs in the third. Jeff Cook singled and scored in the inning. Garthwaite had his second double of the night and also scored a run.

With the score 7-2, the JetHawks sent 15 men to the plate in the sixth and scored nine runs on nine hits. Kelly Stinnett had a two-run double and an RBI single for Lancaster. For the second time in the game Garthwaite drove home three more runs with a bases-loaded double. For the JetHawks slugger, it was his third double of the game.

Garthwaite tied the league record in the seventh, as he led off the inning with his fourth double of the game. He became the second JetHawks player to have four doubles in a game this year, and the tenth to reach that mark since 1958.

Derek Bruce also had four doubles in a game this year for the JetHawks.

A.J. Shappi (2-4) turned in his third straight quality start as he won his second game with the JetHawks this year.

Garthwaite finished the game with five hits and six RBI.

The series with High Desert continues on Saturday at Mavericks Stadium. Matt Chico will go to the mound for the JetHawks and Billy Buckner will make the start for the Mavericks in the 7:05 P.M. game.
