Stockton Ports News Release
MODESTO, Calif. - For the first time this season, the Stockton Ports have been swept in a series. Modesto Nuts right-hander Darren McCaughan (5-8) spun a gem on Thursday night at John Thurman field and tossed eight scoreless frames as the Nuts handed the Ports their 12th shutout loss of the season by a final of 3-0.
Modesto scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning as Bryson Brigman tripled to the left field corner and scored on an ensuing sacrifice fly by Joe Rizzo to put the Nuts on the board. Ports starter Evan Manarino (3-4) would work a perfect fifth but give up a pair of runs in the sixth. With runners at second and third and two outs, Manny Pazos lofted a single over the head of the leaping second baseman Cobie Vance to score both runners and extend the Modesto lead to 3-0.
Manarino would suffer the loss, going six innings and allowing eight hits while striking out seven.
McCaughan, meanwhile, did not have a situation where he had two men aboard at the same time. He pitched around a two-out double by Luke Persico in the first inning, a leadoff single by Edwin Diaz in the second, a leadoff walk in the fourth and a two-out single by Persico in the sixth. He went on to retire the last seven batters he faced and earned the win, allowing three hits while walking two and striking out five.
Wyatt Mills (SV, 11) came on to pitch the ninth inning and gave up a leadoff single to Chase Calabuig. Three batters later with two outs, Diaz would strike out but reach base on a wild pitch that got the possible-tying run to the plate. Brett Siddall, however, would strike out swinging to end the ballgame as Mills notched his 11th save of the season.
Pat Krall pitched the final two innings scoreless in relief of Manarino for Stoctkon.
After suffering their first series sweep of the season, the Ports travel to Lake Elsinore on Friday to open a three-game series with the Storm. Matt Milburn (6-3, 3.75 ERA) takes the ball for the Ports in the series opener, opposed by Storm right-hander Michel Baez (3-7, 2.97 ERA). First pitch at The Diamond is set for 7 p.m. PDT.
