Modesto Nuts News Release
Modesto, CA. - Darren McCaughan dominated over eight innings to help the Modesto Nuts to a 3-0 win over the Stockton Ports on Thursday night at John Thurman Field.
McCaughan (W, 5-8) worked eight shutout innings to secure the Nuts' (44-61; 14-21) first sweep of the season and their fourth shutout of the year.
The righty worked around base runners in the first four innings before he settled into a groove. After a leadoff walk in the fourth inning, McCaughan allowed just one more hit over his final five innings of work.
Wyatt Mills (S, 11/14) worked around two baserunners in the ninth to lock up the Nuts' fifth straight win.
Evan Manarino (L, 3-4) was sharp as well in his start for the Ports (61-44; 17-18). The southpaw put up three scoreless innings before Byrson Brigman tripled to start the fourth. Joe Rizzo brought him in on a sacrifice fly to get the Nuts in front.
In the sixth, Nick Zammarelli singled to start the inning and extend his hitting streak to ten games. Brigman followed with the third of his four hits. After a pop out, Gareth Morgan smashed a warning track fly ball that allowed both base runners to move into scoring position. Manny Pazos lifted a soft single into shallow right to bring home two runs and give the Nuts some breathing room.
The Nuts go for their sixth straight win on Thursday in the three-game series opener with the Quakes. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 6:50 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC.
