Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - In a week where the Stockton Ports were shut out twice, the Boys of Banner Island wound up on the positive side of a shutout on Sunday afternoon. The Ports shut out the Lake Elsinore Storm 5-0 in the opener of a three-game series at Banner Island Ballpark. It marked Stockton's second shutout victory of the season and Lake Elsiniore's third shutout loss.

The Ports opened the scoring in the second inning when Myrio Richard hit a two-run homer with one out off Storm starter Frank Garces (4-4). Garces was victimized by the home run ball again in the third when Addison Russell hit his fifth home run of the season out to right-center field to make it a 3-0 game. Russell went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run.

Stockton added a run in the fourth as Antonio Lamas reached on an error to start the inning and scored three batters later on a two-out RBI double by Tony Thompson to make it a 4-0 score.

Garces suffered the loss for the Storm, going five innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out six.

Ports starter Deyvi Jimenez pitched around infield singles in the second, third and fourth innings to keep the Storm out of the run column. Jimenez received a no-decision after going four innings and allowing three hits while matching a season high with five strikeouts.

T.J. Walz (4-0) came on to start the fifth for the Ports and set down nine of the 10 batters he faced as he earned the win on the afternoon.

Stockton added a run in the seventh as Thompson hit a leadoff home run off Storm reliever Matt Branham to make it a 5-0 ballgame. Thompson went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Omar Duran came on to pitch the eighth and escaped a bases-loaded jam with two outs after allowing a single and a pair of walks. David Mota pitched the ninth inning and worked around a one-out walk to keep Stockton's shutout intact.

The Ports and Storm play the second game of their three-game set on Monday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Tanner Peters (3-3, 5.16 ERA) gets the start for Stockton, opposed by Lake Elsinore right-hander John Hussey (0-1, 20.65 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
