Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA - The Rawhide fell behind early, but made a couple of late inning pushes to beat Lancaster 8-4 and steal the series on Saturday night at Rawhide Ballpark. Rawhide starter Andrew Barbosa was chased after the 4th inning despite pitching well for the most part. But the bullpen held steady and the offense put together three-run rallies in the 6th and 8th innings to push their way past the JetHawks.
Andrew Barbosa loaded the bases with just one out in the top of the 2nd inning, but escaped the inning giving up just one run via a sacrifice fly from Brandon Meredith.
The damage control from Barbosa would end up paying off for the Rawhide, as Sean Jamieson singled to center off Thomas Shirley to plate Ryan Court and tie the game at 1-1.
The offense would continue to provide run support in the bottom of the 3rd inning sparked by a miscue on the defensive side for Lancaster. Gerson Montilla popped up in foul territory on the 1st base side, but the ball popped out of the glove of Telvin Nash, keeping the at-bat alive. Montilla singled the very next pitch and stole second base to put himself in scoring position. Two batters later, Court singled to plate Montilla, giving the Rawhide a 2-1 lead.
Merideth hit a two-out, full count homer to left off Barbosa with two runners on in the top of the 4th inning, giving Lancaster a 4-2 lead. It was Merideth's second homerun of the season.
That would be it for Barbosa, who was pitching well for the first part of the game until the two-out homerun. Barbosa lasted 4.0 innings, giving up the four earned runs on three hits and four walks.
The Rawhide would get things going in the bottom of the 6th inning with the second starter Blair Walters on the mound in Lancaster's "piggyback" rotation. Sean Jamieson hit a lead off triple to deep center and two batters later, Evan Marzilli would draw a walk to put runners at the corners. Adam Eaton then snuck a drag bunt up the first base line to bring home Jamieson. Eaton would then steal second base and the throw from the catcher bounced off the glove of second baseman Delino DeShields, allowing Marzilli to come home and tie the game on the error.
Eaton kept the pressure on, swiping third base with one out and Gerson Montilla followed up with a line drive right back at the pitcher, bouncing off the foot of Walters into the outfield, giving the Montilla the double and a 5-4 lead for the Rawhide.
The Rawhide tacked on three more insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th inning, which included a two-run shot to deep left center from Montilla.
Kaleb Fleck was summoned in the 9th inning and retired the side in order, securing the series win and the game by a final score of 8-4. The Rawhide will start an eight day, seven game road trip beginning in Modesto. The team will be back home on Memorial Day for a game against the Nuts at 4 pm.
