Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - On a night when the Stockton Ports bullpen was on point, the offense had trouble getting started on Wednesday at Banner Island Ballpark. Stockton mustered just a run on five hits as the San Jose Giants beat the Ports for a sixth straight time, on this night by a final of 4-1.
San Jose plated three of its four runs in the first. After back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out, Chris Shaw drove in the first run with an RBI groundout to the shortstop. Aramis Garcia and Steven Duggar followed with back-to-back broken-bat RBI singles that gave the Giants a 3-0 advantage.
Stockton got its only run in the bottom of the first when Danny Valencia hit a solo homer out to left off Giants starter Andrew Suarez (2-1) to cut the San Jose lead to 3-1. It was the only run allowed by Suarez, however, in seven strong innings of work. The left-hander earned the win, allowing five hits while striking out four.
Ports starter Daniel Gossett (1-1), in his first start since coming off the disabled list, kept the Giants out of the run column in the second and third frames. In the fourth, Gossett gave up a leadoff double to Jonah Arenado on a deep fly ball that got lost in the lights for Ports center fielder James Harris. After the double, Gossett was lifted for Matt Stalcup, who later in the inning yielded a sac-fly to Brandon Bednar that scored Arenado and made it a 4-1 Giants lead.
Gossett suffered his first loss of the season, going three-plus innings and allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out four.
Stalcup, Cody Stull, Carlos Navas and Lou Trivino combined to toss six scoreless innings to close out the ballgame for Stockton. Reyes Moronta and Rodolfo Martinez (SV, 7) pitched a perfect eighth and ninth inning, respectively, to close out the game for the Giants. Martinez earned his seventh save of the season.
The Ports and Giants play the final game of their four-game set on Thursday at Banner Island Ballpark. Brett Graves (2-3, 6.00 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander Sam Coonrod (0-1, 2.51 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
