San Jose Giants News Release

STOCKTON, CA - The San Jose Giants used a three-run top of the first and a solid seven-inning start from Andrew Suarez to post a 4-1 victory over the Stockton Ports on Wednesday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. The win was San Jose's (13-11) third straight to begin the series against the Ports.

Suarez (2-1) allowed only one run and five hits during his outing to pick-up the win. The left-hander, who matched the longest start of his career, walked two and struck out four. Reyes Moronta (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) and Rodolfo Martinez (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) then tossed perfect eighth and ninth innings respectively to seal the victory. Martinez earned his seventh save of the season.

Aramis Garcia (3-for-5, 2B, RBI) had three hits and drove in a run to lead the Giants offensively. Steven Duggar (2-for-5, RBI) also finished with a multi-hit game.

San Jose jumped out early with a three-run top of the first against Stockton starter Daniel Gossett. Back-to-back singles from Ronnie Jebavy and Brandon Bednar started the game before a walk to C.J Hinojosa loaded the bases with none out. Chris Shaw then hit a sharp grounder that was stopped by a diving Mikey White at shortstop. White threw out Shaw at first, however Jebavy scored on the play to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Garcia was up next and he singled into left plating Bednar with the second run of the frame. Duggar then blooped a single into right to score Hinojosa for a 3-0 advantage.

The only run allowed by Suarez came in the bottom of first on a solo home run by rehabbing Oakland A's third baseman Danny Valencia. Suarez then pitched around a two-out walk to Tyler Marincov in the first before setting down the Ports 1-2-3 in the second and third innings.

San Jose's final run of the contest came in the top of the fourth. Jonah Arenado led off with a double to deep center, moved to third on Cristian Paulino's sacrifice bunt and then scored on Bednar's sacrifice fly. The run extended the Giants lead to 4-1.

Stockton produced a pair of singles in the bottom of the fourth against Suarez, but were unable to score. With one out, Marincov singled to snap a string of nine batters in a row retired by the San Jose starter. Then with two down, Sandber Pimentel singled sharply into right. However when Marincov rounded the bag at second too far, Duggar threw him out to end the inning.

The Ports also threatened in the fifth, but once again failed to score. Mikey White drew a leadoff walk before Lolana Akau reached on a one-out error to put runners on first and second. Suarez though struck out James Harris and then retired Valencia on a groundout to retire the side.

In the bottom of the sixth, Suarez pitched around a two-out double before needing just five pitches in a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

Moronta then set down Stockton in order in the bottom of the eighth to maintain the 4-1 cushion. In the ninth, Martinez went 3 up, 3 down retiring Marincov on a groundout before consecutive strikeouts of Joe Bennie and Pimentel ended the game. The trio of Giants pitchers combined to set down the final 10 Ports hitters of the contest.

Gossett (1-1) suffered the loss after yielding four runs (all earned) on seven hits over three-plus innings. He walked one and struck out four. Four Stockton relievers then combined to throw six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts.

* The Giants improved to 3-3 on their road trip.
