Portland Winterhawks News Release
Hawks Happenings On The Ice:
The Winterhawks enter the final week of the regular season in third place in the U.S. Division with three games to go, needing just a point to clinch a seventh consecutive playoff berth. The Hawks are two points ahead of the Spokane Chiefs, who are currently eighth in the conference and in the final wild card spot, and four ahead of the ninth place Tri-City Americans, who have just two games remaining. The three teams stack up like this:
Third Place: Portland, 73 points, three games remaining (vs. SPO, @ SEA, vs. SEA)
Fourth Place: Spokane, 71 points, four games remaining (@ SEA, @ EVT, @ POR, @ TC)
Fifth Place: Tri-Cities, 69 points, two games remaining (vs. SEA, vs. SPO)
The team that finishes third will take on the second place team in the U.S. Division in the first round of the playoffs, which is currently the Everett Silvertips. The team that finishes fourth in the division will occupy one of the two wild card spots and play one of the division winners.
Portland and Spokane will play Friday at the Moda Center in a critical game for playoff positioning.
Rodrigo Abols scored in the third period last night to extend his goal streak to three games. He has seven points in six games thus far in March, and is up to 49 points in his rookie WHL season.
