Portland Winterhawks News Release
Hawks Happenings On The Ice:
Wednesday the Hawks will have a showdown with the Everett Silvertips in a battle between the top two teams in the U.S. Division. Portland currently trails Everett by four points, but have two games in hand as they look to catch them for the division title. It will be the last head-to-head matchup of the season between the two teams.
Oliver Bjorkstrand scored four times Friday in a win over Seattle to make history on several fronts:
It extended his goal streak to 12 games, setting a new franchise record that had stood since the team's inaugural 1976-77 season when Tony Currie did it.
He reached the 50-goal mark in his 50th game of the season, becoming the first player in the WHL to accomplish the 50-in-50 mark since Medicine Hat's Emerson Etem did it in the 2011-12 season.
With 52 goals he's the first Hawk to reach 50 in back-to-back seasons since Dennis Holland did it in the 1987-88 and 1988-89 campaigns.
Bjorkstrand's 52 goals lead the WHL, and he enters the week tied for second in overall scoring in the league with 97 points, leaving him three shy of consecutive 100-point seasons.
While Oliver Bjorkstrand has made history with his offensive explosion, Nic Petan is putting up gaudy numbers of his own. Over his last six games he's posted 20 points- without a goal. Each of Petan's points during his streak have been assists, and with 66 helpers on the season he ranks third in the WHL in that category, while moving up to a tie for 13th in overall scoring with 77 points.
The third member of that line, Paul Bittner, had a big night of his own Saturday when he posted a career-high five points with his second hat trick of the season and two assists. He reached the 30-goal plateau for the season in that game, with 32 goals and 31 assists for a career-high 63 points this season.
