
Portland Winterhawks Fall 5-4 in a Shootout in Preseason Opener

The Portland Winterhawks opened the 2011 preseason with a 5-4 shootout loss Saturday to the Tri-City Americans in a game played in Everett, WA.
Tri-Cities opened the scoring 4:54 into the game on a goal by Olli Dickson, but the Winterhawks struck back with two goals of their own in the first period, first from Nic Petan on a power play at the 8:44 mark, followed by a goal by Oliver Gabriel at the 12:01 mark.
The Americans tied it up three minutes into the second period on a power play goal by Brian Williams, but again Portland followed with two goals of their own. Ty Rattie scored on a power play at the 13:50 mark, then just 1:23 later Jason Trott scored to give Portland a 4-2 lead heading into the third period.
Tri-Cities made it 4-3 at the 8:06 mark of the third on a power play goal by Justin Feser, then got the equalizer with just under three minutes remaining in regulation when Malte Stromwell scored to make it 4-4, sending the game to overtime.
After a scoreless extra frame, the game went to a shootout, where the Americans' Brendan Shinnimin scored the only goal to give Tri-Cities the win.
Portland outshot Tri-Cities 38-34. The Winterhawks split goaltending duties between Brendan Burke and Chase Martin, with Burke stopping 11 of 13 Tri-Cities shots while Martin stopped 18 of 20 shots he faced.
The Hawks are back in action again tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. against the Spokane Chiefs in Everett.
