Porter Registers Shutout as Chiefs Rout Rockets

SPOKANE, Wash. - Bonners Ferry, Idaho native James Porter Jr. recorded a shutout against his former team on Saturday night as the Spokane Chiefs topped the Kelowna Rockets, 6-0. Winger Luke Toporowski extended his goal streak to five games and his point streak to seven to headline the Chiefs' powerful attack.

After putting up seven goals against the Rockets on Friday night in Kelowna, the Chiefs kept their foot on the gas, scoring three in the game's first period including a pair of markers by Leif Mattson, who was acquired by the Chiefs from Kelowna earlier this season. Minnesota Wild prospect Adam Beckman also found the net in the period, extending his WHL-leading goal total to 36 on the season.

New Jersey Devils prospect Ty Smith found a path through traffic to get one past Kelowna netminder Roman Basran at 16:09 of the second period, delivering the Chiefs' third power play goal of the night and pushing the Spokane lead to 4-0.

The Chiefs continued to take advantage of Kelowna penalties in the third, scoring twice from Toporowski and rookie forward Brandon Reller. Toporowski has now totaled 13 points (5G-8A) over his current point streak. The Chiefs played a significant portion of the game with a man advantage, going on the power play nine times and successfully converting five of those opportunities.

Porter finished 17-of-17 in net as he recorded the second shutout by a Chiefs goaltender this season and the fifth of his career. Basran ended the night 39-of-45 for Kelowna. The Rockets ended the night 0-for-3 on the power play.

The Chiefs head to Portland for a game against the Winterhawks on Tuesday before returning to Spokane Arena on Saturday night for Coca-Cola Family Feast Night and Bobblehead Giveaway on February 8. The first 2,000 fans through the gates and all full season ticket holders will receive a Ty Smith "CHL Defenseman of the Year" bobblehead courtesy of Coca-Cola.
