Brandon, Manitoba - There were certainly no shortage of candidates but for the first time in his Western Hockey League career, Ben McCartney has been chosen the Brandon Wheat Kings' TELUS Player of the Month for January.
Well on his way to a career year offensively, McCartney led Brandon in scoring last month with four goals and fourteen points in twelve games.
McCartney - who scored his 20th goal of the season on Saturday, February 1st in a 4-3 win over the Tigers in Medicine Hat - enters the week with 20 goals and 52 points in 48 games, after scoring 41 points, including a career high 21 goals during the 2018-19 campaign.
Since joining the Wheat Kings in the fall of 2017, the MacDonald, Manitoba product has scored 43 goals and 105 points in 168 career games.
Chosen the club's Hardest Working Player in 2018-19, the former second round bantam draft choice attended Okanagan Hockey Academy from 2015-2017.
One of three Wheat Kings currently ranked by Central Scouting for the 2020 National Hockey League Draft, McCartney attended the Philadelphia Flyers' NHL camp last September.
McCartney joins Jiri Patera (December), Cole Reinhardt (November) and Ethan Kruger (September/October) as this year's monthly winners of this prestigious award.
This award is presented to the Wheat King, who best demonstrates success - both on and off the ice - as a teammate and role model in the community.
TELUS will present Ben with this monthly award during the first intermission of the Wheat Kings next home game - Friday, February 7th - against the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers. Brandon will go into the game with a record of 27-19-2-2 after splitting their four game Alberta road trip this past week.
