Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Rookie F Matt Pope notched his first career goals with a hat trick and a four-point night to lead the Bakersfield Condors to a 7-4 win over the Stockton Thunder before 3,716 fans at Rabobank Arena on Wednesday night.
The Condors fell behind in the first after a pair of goals by Thunder C Cory Urquhart, but rallied to tie it. F Matt Caruana snapped home his second of the season, on a power play, from the right circle to cut the lead in half at 16:49. Just 1:11 later, it was tied up. C Dave Bonk grabbed a turnover along the end boards in the Stockton zone and found Pope in the slot for his first professional goal. G Dave McKee made 18 first period saves for the Condors.
Bakersfield erupted in the second period, scoring four times to take a commanding lead. C Charlie Kronschnabel scored shorthanded at 8:11 to start the surge. Caruana netted his second of the game at 10:19, and then Pope scored twice in the waning minutes of the frame to make it 6-3 through 40 minutes.
The Thunder cut the deficit down to two with a goal at 10:02, but RW Chad Painchaud rifled home his first of the season into the empty net to seal the Condors first win of the campaign, 7-4. McKee stopped 33 shots in the game to collect his first win as a Condor.
