Idaho picks up first win of the season

Phoenix, AZ- The Steelheads (1-0-1) got on the winning track tonight with a 3-1 win against the Phoenix RoadRunners (2-2) at the US Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

The first period saw Phoenix open the scoring, as they shot out to a 1-0 lead in the first minute of the hockey game. After a Kris Sparre four-minute double minor for high-sticking, Andrew Desjardins opened the scoring for the RoadRunners with his second goal of the season at :58, as Mitch Carefoot and Kimbi Daniels picked up assists on the power play goal. Near the end of the first period, the Steelheads lost defenseman Matt Stephenson for the remainder of the hockey game as he was assessed a five-minute major penalty for spearing.

The Steelheads started the second period by killing the remainder of Stephenson's penalty before eventually netting the equalizer. At 16:07, Brent Shepheard scored an unassisted wraparound goal after a great effort to hold the zone for the Steelheads. After two periods of play, the Steelheads and RoadRunners were deadlocked on the scoreboard, tied at a goal apiece, and tied in shots on goal, with 16.

Garett Bembridge opened the scoring in period number three at the 1:43 mark; picking up assists on the goal were Ben Nelson and Steve Gainey. Marty Flichel tacked on some insurance on the power play for the Steelheads at 4:59, with assists going to Steve Gainey and Kris Sparre.
