Point Streak Continues for Hong, Caps Fall in Overtime 4-3

December 4, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release

Shorthanded, down one, in the third, Madison's James Hong found the back of the net to tie the game at three. For Hong, the goal marked the sixth straight game that he was able to record a point in, third straight recording a goal. The six-game point streak has him with the third longest such streak in the league. The Ohio State commit has registered eight points, including five goals through this stretch of games dating back to November 18th against Green Bay. Hong has now averaged over a point per game rate since October 28th.

Also scoring in the game for Madison was Austin Burnevik(13) and Aiden Long(3). For Burnevik, the goal was his third of the weekend after making waves on social media with a goal on Friday night. Long's third goal of the season came at even strength. This was his first of the season with five Capitols skaters on the ice. His first goal came shorthanded, and the second with an extra attacker on.

Patriks Berzins stopped 33 of 37 shots on goal in the contest, but an overtime double minor power play that hung over from regulation was too much for the Caps backstop. The Latvian is now 0-3-2-0 over his last five games with a save percentage under .900.

Finn Brink picked up a pair of assists and Will Felicio added one as the pair played in their final USHL games before heading to the World Junior A Challenge in Nova Scotia. The tournament starts on Monday, December 11th, for the US as the team will face off against Slovakia. The US looks to capture back-to-back titles in the event.

Madison starts a quirky schedule throughout the rest of the schedule leading up to the holiday break. Madison will play Saturday, December 9th, against Dubuque at home, Sunday, December 10th, versus Cedar Rapids, and then again on Saturday, December 16th, against Cedar Rapids. The team will also open play following the break at home as part of the longest home stand by time of the season. The team will have a couple of four-game home stands throughout the season, but none spanning as long as the one coming up for the Caps.

As part of the pregame show in-arena on Friday, the Capitols will unveil their one-day rebrand for December 9th's Wisconsin Night presented by New Glarus Brewing. Madison will become the Wisconsin IceHoles for one night only with special jerseys to be auctioned off after the game. Tickets are available for next Saturday's game at tickets.madcapshockey.com.
