Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

BRIDGEPORT, Ct. - The Sugar Land Skeeters mounted a late rally, but fell 8-4 on the road to the Bridgeport Bluefish in front of 4,191 fans at Harbor Yard. The loss sends the Skeeters to 4-6 in the second half and 40-40 overall.

Matt Wright was tagged with the loss, falling to 5-3 on the year. The setback was just the third time in 15 starts this season that the Skeeters were unable to win a game started by Wright. The right-hander went 5.1 innings, giving up six runs on 13 hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

The Bluefish made the first splash in the bottom of the second, striking for a pair of runs. Jobduan Morales and Wilson Batista led off the inning with back-to-back doubles to break the scoring seal. Brandon Jones notched a one-out double of his own, giving Bridgeport a 2-0 lead.

Bridgeport added another run in the fifth on a two-out rally. Welington Dotel singled with two outs to extend the inning before swiping second to move into scoring position. John Alonso recorded a double to score Dotel and stake the Bluefish a 3-0 cushion.

The Bluefish would double the lead in the bottom of the sixth on five base hits, including a pair of two-baggers. Batista and Andres Rodriguez each logged doubles to open the frame and Brandon Jones picked up a single to put runners on the corners. Matt Wessinger lifted a sacrifice fly to center to add the second run of the frame. Josh Prince picked up a single to chase Wright from the contest with two runners aboard. Bryant Nelson followed with a single off Andrew Johnston to score Jones and increase Bridgeport's lead to 6-0.

With James Parr on the mound in the bottom of the eighth, Bridgeport tacked on two more runs on a two-run home run from Prince, inflating the cushion to 8-0.

After being held to just four hits through the first eight innings, Sugar Land's offense finally came alive in the top of the ninth. The Skeeters opened the inning with six-straight singles off Luis Perdomo as Allan Dykstra, Patrick Palmeiro, Denny Almonte, Renny Osuna, Amadeo Zazueta and Kevin Russo all recorded base knocks. Zazueta drove in a pair of runs in a 3-for-4 showing at the plate, but the rally was snuffed out by Bridgeport after turning to Patrick Mincey with runners on first and second to close out the game.
