Sacramento River Cats News Release
ROUND ROCK, TX - Catcher Ryan Hanigan's two-run double in the seventh inning provided the winning runs for the Sacramento River Cats (33-35) in a 3-1 victory over the Round Rock Express (30-37).
The River Cats took their fourth road series of the season thanks to a combined effort between rehabbing San Francisco Giants right-hander Jeff Samardzija and lefty Matt Gage. Samardzija tossed three scoreless while striking out four before reaching hit pitch limit, then Gage followed with 4.2 shutout innings of his own.
Gage got into a bit of a bind in the eighth by putting two men on base to bring the tying run to the plate, but Derek Law entered and struck out Scott Heineman to end the threat. Law would eventually record a four-out save, though he did allow a run on one hit and a walk in the final inning.
The River Cats are off to New Orleans for a four-game series with the Baby Cakes. Left-hander Daniel Camarena (0-0, 0.78) is poised to make his fifth start with Sacramento while Sandy Alcantara (4-2, 3.88) will be on the bump for New Orleans. First pitch is set for 4.00 p.m. (PT). Additional Notes
- Matt Gage's 4.2 innings of relief marked the longest bullpen outing of the season by a River Cats pitcher, narrowly passing the previous leader Jose Flores (4.1 innings).
- Austin Slater pulled ahead of teammate Steven Duggar into second place in the Pacific Coast League with 22 doubles. Slater is tied for second in the league with the Sky Sox's Brandon Barnes, and they both trail Salt Lake's David Fletcher (25).
