New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - An early 1-0 lead proved to be all New Jersey Jackals (10-14) starter Isaac "Pitbul" Pavlik needed as he hurled eight scoreless innings in the Jackals 6-2 win over the Nashua Pride (12-12) on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. The win was the Jackals sixth in their last seven games. The Jackals scored a run in the bottom of the third against Nashua starter Hideki Nagasaka when 2B Marcus Sanders doubled and scored on an RBI single by SS Bryant Nelson. Staked to a 1-0 lead entering the fourth, Pavlik (7-4) proceeded to retire ten of the next eleven batters he faced, earning the victory while allowing six hits over eight innings. The Jackals veteran left-hander struck out five hitters without surrendering the walk as he turned in his eleventh consecutive quality start. The Jackals 1-0 lead held until the bottom of the eighth, when New Jersey chased Nagasaka from the game. With one out in the eighth, three consecutive singles loaded the bases. The Pride turned to closer Adam Piechowski to stop the damage, but Jackals C Matt Lauderdale singled home a run to make it 2-0. Two bases-loaded walks extended the lead to 4-0 before CF Zack Smithlin laced a two-run single into right field to put the Jackals up 6-0.
In the top of the ninth, Nashua got on the board with two runs against Jackals newly-acquired reliever Dustin Cameron, but the rally proved to be too little, too late as New Jersey hung on to win the four-game series 3-1. In the series, the Jackals collected 45 hits.
For the Pride, Nagasaka (6-5) was the tough-luck loser, allowing four runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings while walking three batters and striking out six. Offensively, Nelson went 3-4 for New Jersey while Nashua DH Brian Duplissie also collected three hits in four trips to the plate.
The Jackals travel to nearby Augusta, NJ on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. to begin a three-game weekend series against the Sussex Skyhawks when New Jersey sends right-hander Aaron Tressler (3-6, 5.47 ERA) to the mound. If you can't make it out to Skylands Park, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
