Pitching Lifts Fayetteville Past Tobs

WILSON, N.C - Max McDonald fired a complete game, five-hitter as the Fayetteville SwampDogs shut out the Wilson Tobs 3-0 on Saturday night in front of 1,705 fans at Historic Fleming Stadium.

Fayetteville (24-12, 6-2) score a run in the first inning when Zach Gawrych singled to being the game and advanced to third base on a throwing error before scoring two batters later on a Mike Tauchman single.

The SwampDogs added another run in the third when Tauchman tripled to the gap in right centerfield against Tobs starter Tyler Bolton (L, 1-5) and the final run of the game crossed for Fayetteville in the fourth when Connor Obrochta, who singled to begin the inning and scored on a two out error for the 3-0 lead for the SwampDogs.

Wilson (14-27, 5-8) could not do anything to solve the puzzle that was McDonald (W, 2-0) as the left-hander worked his first complete game of the season by firing just 83 pitches on the evening.

The Tobs, however did have scoring chances as they put two one with no one out in the fourth but were unable to score as they fell to the Fayetteville SwampDogs, 3-0.

Wilson returns to action on Monday night when they travel to Petersburg to battle the Generals at 7:05. The Tobs will return to Historic Fleming Stadium on Tuesday night at 7:05 when they host the Martinsville Mustangs.

The Wilson Tobs are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both the players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 53 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and CY Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
