Edenton Steamers News Release

EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers (27-11, 9-3) scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to cruise to a 5-1 victory in game one and in come from behind fashion scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to hold on for a 4-3 win in game two against the Wilson Tobs (14-26, 5-7) on Friday at Historic Hicks Field.

Game one was the suspended game from Monday, July 9th and Wilson got off to a 1-0 lead with a Zack lee solo home run in the top of the third.

Wilson held that 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth when Edenton was able to bring home two runs with the benefit of two wild pitches and two Tobs errors for a 2-1 lead.

Edenton put the game away in the bottom of the fifth when Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) connected for his seventh home run of season to once again tie his teammates Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) and Spencer Branigan (university of Pennsylvania) for the Coastal Plain League lead. Back-to-back singles followed and Camporeale drove in both runners, picking up RBIs 28 and 29 on the season, with a double and it was 5-1 Steamers.

Taylor Braun (Wright State University) earned the win, improving to 3-2 while Brett Ash swallowed the loss, falling to 3-2.

Game two began for Matt Adams (Southern polytechnic State University) roughly. Wilson scored two unearned runs, the first on an error by Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) at third base that scored Harry Slade and the second on an RBI walk by Collins Cuthrell.

DJ Johnson (Mercer University) earned an RBI for taking a walk in the bottom of the second inning from Brent Bonvillian to cut the lead to 2-1.

Adams had some control problems after Trey Whaley doubled and stole third base. A wild pitch with two outs scored Whaley and it was 3-1 Tobs.

Bonvillian pitched all six innings for Wilson and in the bottom of the sixth gave up the lead. With the bases loaded and one out hot hitting Meadows came up and laced a two-run double off the center field wall to tie the game at 3-3. Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) came home from third on a wild pitch for the 4-3 Steamer lead heading to the final frame.

Jordan Egan (Norfolk State University) emerged from the bullpen to close out the win. He allowed the first three batters to reach base on a single, a walk and an error. With the bases loaded and nobody out Egan got Aaron Rea to foul out to the catcher, then he struck out Cuthrell and Jackson Slaid for his 14th save of the season.

This was the first time the Steamers had swept a double header in four previous attempts. In the two games Edenton was doubled up five times total (three GDP's and two runners thrown out trying to advance on fly outs) and had three runners thrown out from the outfield.

Egan sits just one save shy of tying the Steamers franchise record of 15 saves in a season set in 2008 by Luke Demko (University of Rhode Island) and Madison Beaird (Arkansas tech University), with seven outfield assists, sits just one shy of tying the franchise record of eight set by Justin Newman (Georgia State University) in 2004.
