Morehead City Marlins News Release

HAMPTON, Va. - The Morehead City Marlins (3-9 second half, 13-26 overall) scored six runs in the second inning and never looked back en route to a 15 -3 win over the Peninsula Pilots (5-8 second half, 17-23-1 overall) Saturday evening at War Memorial Stadium.

The 15 runs were a season-high for Morehead City as it marked the first time it had cracked double-digits all season. The win snapped a six-game losing streak, a streak in which they scored only 12 runs.

Lost in all the offense was the pitching of Matt Ogden (2-2) who earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) in six innings of work.

In the second inning Sal Annunziata singled and later scored when he stole third base and came around on a throwing error by the catcher. Later in the inning, Ryan Cranmer and Eric Peterson scored on a three-run home run by Geoff DeGroot to put the Marlins up 4-0. The Fish then rattled off four straight singles, with Sam Ott and Annunziata each tallying an RBI to extend the lead to 6-0.

The Pilots got one back in the second and another in the third to cut the lead to 6-2, but after a scoreless fourth inning the Marlins erupted in the fifth. The first three hitters reached via two walks and a hit-by-pitch before Peterson launched a grand slam over the left field wall to push the Marlins ahead 10-2. Morehead City tacked on one more run in the frame when DeGroot was hit by a pitch and later scored on a single from Annunziata.

The Fish scored four more runs in the ninth inning, when Matt Anderson and Cranmer each drove in a run with a single and Peterson drove in two more runs on a single of his own.

Offensively, the Marlins were led by Peterson who finished 3-for-6 with six RBIs and DeGroot who ended 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Annunziata chipped in three hits with two RBIs and Robbie Rea also had a three hits.

Brad Zambron (1-2) suffered the loss in his first start of the season, giving up six runs (five earned) in two innings.

The Marlins are back on the road tomorrow as they take on the Wilmington Sharks at Buck Hardee Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
