Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (August 17, 2008) - 1B Eduardo Rios broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run home run and the Rox pitching staff suffocated the Worcester Tornadoes' offense as Brockton won a three-game series with a 4-2 win over the Tornadoes on Sunday night at Campanelli Stadium.
Worcester had 11 hits in the game but was 0-14 with runners in scoring position as the Rox pitching staff pitched out of numerous jams. RHP John Kelly recorded his seventh win of the season with six, hard fought innings against one of the most productive offenses in the league. Kelly allowed just one run on six hits with four strikeouts and twice escaped a bases-loaded jam unscathed. He passed the baton to the bullpen for the final nine outs of the game. RHP Keith Noe, RHP Matt Zachary, and RHP Jerry Dunn combined to pitch the final three innings after Kelly's departure. The trio allowed one unearned run and recorded three strikeouts. Dunn picked up his league-leading 20th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Rox offense was led by Rios who finished the night 3-4 with a big two-run home run which broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning. It eventually proved to be all the offense Brockton would need as the pitching staff held the Tornadoes to just two runs. 2B Melvin Falu had three hits along with Rios, and RF Dennis Abreu and C Lee Rubin each drove in runs as well.
Kelly's win was his 22nd in his Rox career, tying the franchise mark for wins in a career. He is also just three strikeouts from breaking the Rox career strikeout record.
Brockton has a day off on Monday before hitting the road to play six games in six days in New Jersey. The first stop for the Rox will be Atlantic City on Tuesday night to take on Cecil Fielder's Atlantic City Surf. Tuesday night's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
