New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - In a back-and-forth contest, the New Jersey Jackals scored two runs in the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie en route to a 6-4 win against the Atlantic City Surf on Sunday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium. In the game, three Surf errors led to two unearned Jackals' runs.
The Jackals took a first-inning lead when 3B Chris Kelly flared a two-run single to right field to give New Jersey a 2-0 advantage. However, Atlantic City countered in the top of the third when SS Anthony Granato singled home a run to make it a 2-1 game. Later in the third with Granato at first and 2B Brad Thoma aboard at third, Jackals' starter Isaac Pavlik attempted a pickoff at first and Thoma broke for the plate, stealing home to tie the game at 2-2. In the bottom of the fifth, the Jackals regained the lead. SS Bryant Nelson reached on an error and scored on a triple by 1B Juan Tejeda to give the Jackals a 3-2 lead. LF Luke Allen followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Jackals a 4-2 advantage. But once again, the Surf would rebound with two seventh inning runs on a Thoma RBI double and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Granato to even the score at 4-4.
In the Jackals' eighth, RF Billy Kovatch reached base on a one-out error by Surf 1B Eddie Kim. Kovatch then stole second before DH Tommy Murphy's single into right field plated the go-ahead run as New Jersey went up 5-4. 2B Marcus Sanders then singled Murphy home to add some insurance and cap the scoring at 6-4.
For the Jackals, reliever Michael Vicaro (6-4) hurled a scoreless eighth inning to earn the win. Pavlik allowed four runs on eight hits in seven innings, but didn't factor in the decision. The loss went to Surf reliever Walker Whitley (1-3), who surrendered two eighth-inning runs. Jackals closer Rusty Tucker notched his league-leading 19th save of the season.
Offensively for the Jackals, Kovatch continued to torch his former team, going 2-4 with a double and two stolen bases. Tejeda, and Kelly also chipped in with two hits each. For the Surf, DH Clyde Williams went 3-4.
