Pitching Again Works in Sharks' Favor

Wilmington Sharks News Release

Wilmington, N.C. - A first inning run against Ross Whitley was no problem, as the Wilmington Sharks (9-5, 25-16) came back to take a 3-1 win over the Florence RedWolves (7-9, 20-24) at Buck Hardee Field on Thursday night.

A crowd of just under 2,300 fans saw the visitors get on the board in the first inning before Ross Whitley worked his way out of jams to keep that one run the only tally for Florence on the night. The Catawba starter allowed runners to reach third base on four occasions in six innings of work, but only one of them was able to cross home plate.

Two runs in the sixth inning proved enough to get Whitley the victory, with Cole McInturff scoring on a wild pitch and Alex Freedman being driven in by Aaron Preston. The Sharks also added an insurance run in the seventh, when McInturff led off with a walk, advanced on a sacrifice, stole third base and came across on a Casey Goss single.

Wes Hatley threw two innings of relief, allowing just one hit. Andrew Brockett earned his ninth save of the summer after facing just three batters in the ninth.

With the home victory, the Sharks have matched the club's record of 17 wins at the Shark Tank. That mark was also reached in 2007, though records are only available since the 2001 season.

The Sharks travel to Edenton on Friday then return to Buck Hardee Field on Saturday for their last game before the All Star Break. For more on the Sharks, visit wilmingtonsharks.com, add Sharky Sharks on Facebook and follow @ILMSharks on Twitter.
