Morehead City Marlins News Release
EDENTON, N.C. - The Edenton Steamers (29-13 overall, 11-5 second half) scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Morehead City Marlins (14-28 overall, 4-11 second half) 3-2 Tuesday night at Historic Hicks Field.
After the first two hitters of the ninth reached on back-to-back singles, Jason Kanzler laid down a bunt that Marlins pitcher Matt Wainman threw errantly to third base, allowing Robbie Zinsmeister to score the winning run from second base.
Wainman (1-3) suffered a second-straight tough loss, tossing all eight innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on 10 hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Last week, the lefty pitched eight innings and took the loss at Petersburg in a 1-0 decision.
Morehead City took the lead in the third inning when Eric Peterson singled and later scored on a two-run, line drive home run to left field off the bat of Chad Shannon for a 2-0 lead. Edenton then countered in the bottom of the frame when Michael Massi led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly to left field from Madison Beaird to make it a one-run game.
The Steamers tied it in the seventh inning when Michael Massi reached first and advanced to second on a throwing error. After moving to third on a single by Johnny Garrett, Massi scored on a throwing error to second base when Garrett stole second to make the score 2-2.
Matt Duncan (5-1) picked up the win for the Steamers, throwing a scoreless ninth inning while Edenton starter Kevin McCarthy tossed eight innings and allowed just two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking none.
The Marlins are back in action tomorrow as they host the Edenton Steamers at Big Rock Stadium. It's Thirsty Thursday presented by Bud Light where all beer is just $1 all night long. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. as Matt Sutor has the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
Notes: Shannon's home run was his first of the season... Wainman pitched into the eighth inning for the second time this season... This was the fourth time in six starts the Marlins scored two runs or less for Wainman... It was the third time the Marlins have lost in walk-off fashion over the past eight days.
