Steamers Stifle Bats, Marlins Drop Second Straight

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Edenton Steamers (30-13 overall, 12-5 second half) defeated the Morehead City Marlins (14-29 overall, 4-12 second half) for the second straight night, 4-2, on Thursday evening at Big Rock Stadium.

The Marlins loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Jordan Egan recorded a fielder's choice and a line-drive double play to shut the door for the save.

Edenton struck first in the top of the first inning with three runs, as they used a trio of walks and a pair of hits for a 3-0 lead. Morehead City then countered with two runs in the second inning. Reed Gordy led off with a single to left field and Ryan Cranmer followed with his seventh home run of the season to cut the Edenton advantage to 3-2.

Edenton plated the final run of the game in the fifth inning when Spencer Branigan singled up the middle to score Koby Kraemer and take a 4-2 lead.

Justin D'Amato (3-2) picked up the win for the Steamers, going five innings and allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Dario Santangelo (0-3) took the loss, tossing 4 2/3 innings and surrendering four runs on six hits while walking four and striking out two. Jordan Egan picked up his league-leading 15th save for the Steamers, also tying the franchise single-season record for saves in the process.

Ben Van KeKerix, Evan Zerff and William Prince combined to throw 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief allowing just two hits for the Fish. On the offensive side, Gordy was 3-for-3 with a walk and a run while Cranmer and Corey Bass were each 2-for-4.

The Marlins are back on the road tomorrow night as they travel to take on the Fayetteville SwampDogs at J.P. Riddle Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.

Notes: Cranmer is now tied with three Steamers for the league-lead in home runs... Geoff DeGroot stole his team-leading 15th base of the season... The Marlins lost six of seven contests against Edenton this season, and are 1-9 against the Steamers all-time.
