Pitcher's Duel Goes against Saints, Lose Third 1-0 Game this Season

ST. PAUL, MN (August 12, 2013) - For nine innings St. Paul Saints starter Anthony Claggett and Sioux Falls Canaries starter Kyle Ruwe went toe-to-toe. The Saints had three runners thrown out at home and a costly error in the top of the 11th proved to be the difference as the Saints lost a franchise high third 1-0 game this season in front of 5,165 at Midway Stadium.

With the game scoreless in the top of the 11th JP Ramirez led off with a single for the Canaries against reliever Kyle Morrison. Kevin Dultz sacrificed him to second. Morrison struck out Stephen King and then the Saints intentionally walked Nick Van Stratten. A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third. Morrison then threw another one to the backstop, but the ball ricocheted back to catcher Dwight Childs. Van Stratten was half way off second base and Childs fired down to second, but short hopped the throw to Adam Frost and it glanced off his leg and allowed Ramirez to score the lone run of the game.

The Saints had two huge opportunities to score in the bottom of the 10th inning. Brandon Tripp led off with a double down the left field line. With one out Jose Hernandez singled to right and Tripp stopped at third. Childs then hit a high chopper to short and Tripp attempted to score, but was thrown out. Frost followed with a single to left, but Hernandez was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Both starters cruised through their nine innings with the Saints having the best chance to score in the fifth. Joey Becker reached on a one out single and moved to second on a Hernandez groundout. With two outs Childs singled to right, but Becker was thrown out trying to score. Ruwe went 9.0 shutout innings allowing six hits while walking one and striking out two.

Claggett was just as brilliant for the Saints. He gave up a leadoff single in the game to Van Stratten and then retired the next five. In the third he gave up a leadoff single to JP Ramirez, but got an inning ending double play.

In the fourth Claggett once again gave up a leadoff single to Van Stratten, but Claggett retired the next 17 batters he faced until a two out walk in the ninth to Van Stratten. Claggett went 9.0 innings allowing three hits while walking one and striking out six.

The same two teams meet in the second game of the three game series at Midway Stadium at 12:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Cole Nelson (3-2, 2.43) to the mound against Canaries RHP Ben Moore (8-5, 4.03).
