WINNIPEG, Manitoba. - The Sioux Falls Canaries and Winnipeg Goldeyes split the final two games of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Shaw Park in Winnipeg.

The Canaries won a 2-1 duel in the resumption of Saturday night's suspended game and took a 4-2 loss in the finale.

In game one, Kyle Vazquez made a spot start and pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings before rain halted play on Saturday night. A trio of three Canaries relievers -- Jordan Whatcott, Chris Allen and Alan DeRatt -- combined to limit the Goldeyes over the final 5 2/3 innings. Whatcott (1-6) earned the win with 3 2/3 frames tossed, and DeRatt gave up only a hit in the ninth for his 18th save.

The Canaries staff held Winnipeg to just three hits. Three sparkling defensive plays from the Canaries infield helped stave off Winnipeg (42-37).

Anthony Trajano doubled to lead off the Canaries' third inning and scored one batter later on Nick Van Stratten's single. Cory Morales knocked in a run with a two-out base hit in the fifth for a 2-0 margin. Winnipeg's only run came on an RBI groundout in the fifth.

In game two, Winnipeg struck first for a run in the third inning on Tyler Graham's single, and Ray Salder hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for a 2-0 advantage. Canaries starter Adam Champion (6-8) ran into bigger trouble in the fifth inning, giving up two more runs on three hits, a walk and a wild pitch. He took the loss, allowing all four runs on six hits. He walked four and fanned four.

The Canaries (33-47) were held scoreless through the first six innings by Winnipeg starter Chris Salamida (3-0). He remains undefeated after throwing 6 1/3 innings on four hits and two runs. He walked three and struck out four.

Van Stratten singled home two runs in the seventh inning with two outs, but Patrick Keating picked up his 15th save when he induced Morales into a groundout to end the game.

The Canaries continue a two-week road trip with a four-game series against the St. Paul Saints at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, August 12. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio KWSN 1230-AM, 98.1-FM and www.kwsn.com.
