
Low-scoring game ends in defeat

AMARILLO, TX - The Sox and the Airhogs combined for nine hits in a victory for Grand Prairie, 4-1 at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. An attendance of 1,042 saw the game which lasted two hours and twenty-five minutes. Starter Joe Newby went eight innings for Amarillo, retiring his last seventeen batters faced. Derek Blacksher would also go eight innings for Grand Prairie.
Joe Newby started the game with a strikeout, and then allowed a single, but go out of the first with a groundout and a fly ball out. The Sox would also get runners on in the first and second innings but were unable to score. Rian Kiniry was walked by Newby to start the third. Two batters later, Brandon Pinckney hit his second single and then Ryan Pineda was walked to load the bases. Andres Rodriguez came up and hit a bloop-single to right, making it 1-0. Palmer Karr drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center and on the same play, the third run scored after an errant throw by the Sox catcher, Trey Ford trying to throw out Pineda at third base.
Amarillo was put down in order for the bottom of the third. The Sox would threaten when Jorge Delgado doubled in the fourth but he was left in scoring position. Joe Newby would not allow a runner on through the rest of the game, recording eight of his ten strikeouts in between the fourth and eighth innings. Amarillo struggled offensively with runners on base as Chris Valencia singled in the sixth but was left on first to end the inning.
In the seventh, the Sox went away in order before rallying in the eighth. Jason Martin reached base on a fielding error by the Airhogs' shortstop, and then advanced to second a sacrifice bunt by Jermel Lomack. Once Martin got to third on a wild pitch, Chris Valencia would drop down a successful RBI-bunt-single to put the Sox on the board, 3-1.
The Sox used relief pitcher, Matt Larkins in the ninth. Larkins walked Rodriguez on four pitches to start the inning and then KC Serna committed an error in an attempt to turn two up the middle. With runners on the corners, Austin Newell hit into a double play to add Grand Prairie's final run, unearned. Patrick Mincey (S, 18) pitched the ninth for the Airhogs and retired his three batters faced while striking out two.
Derek Blacksher (W, 8-6) went eight innings, allowing an unearned run on five hits with four strikeouts and no walked batters. Joe Newby (L, 4-4) allowed three runs, two earned on four hits in eight innings while walking two and striking out ten. Each team made two errors in the field; three of the four were on throws.
With the loss, the Sox fall to 41-40, while the Airhogs improve to 44-37 on the season. Tuesday, the Sox host Grand Prairie for the second of a four-game series. Game time is set for 7:05pm with the pregame show starting at 6:55pm on Ustream via www.amarillosox.com.
