St. John's IceCaps News Release

ST. JOHN'S, NL - Despite rallying to within a goal in the third period, the St. John's IceCaps couldn't complete the comeback against the Portland Pirates, who held on for the 5-4 win Monday night at Mile One Centre.

Louis Domingue led the way for Portland with 30 saves, while Tobias Rieder had a goal and an assist. Mark Louis had the game-winner for Portland, and Brett Hextall, Lucas Lessio, and Mathieu Brisebois chipped in with the other tallies.

Eddie Pasquale was strong between the pipes for St. John's, turning aside 21-of-24 shots in relief of Jussi Olkinuora in taking the loss. Kael Mouillierat had a goal and an assist for St. John's, with JC Lipon, Will O'Neill, and John Albert also scoring for the home side.

Having an extra attacker on the ice for a delayed penalty call, Hextall got Portland on the board first 8:03 into the opening frame. Charging into the IceCaps' zone, Hextall took the feed from Jordan Martinook before beating Olkinuora with a wraparound goal to make it 1-0.

Just over two minutes later, Rieder extended the Pirates' lead to two. Set up by Brandon McMillan in the slot, Rieder fired a short-angle slapshot that eluded Olkinuora to the short side.

After Pasquale replaced Olkinuora following Portland's second goal, Lipon then cut the lead in half with under two minutes to play in the period. Taking the feed from Adam Lowry in the corner, Lipon launched his sixth of the season past the glove of Domingue.

With the IceCaps on the power play in the second period, O'Neill squared things up at two goals apiece at 5:55. Capitalizing on a back door slap pass from Mouillierat, O'Neill made no mistake in one-timing it glove side past Domingue.

The 2-2 tie was broken on a goal from Lessio at 12:45, however, when the Pirates jumped out to a 3-2 lead on a 5-on-3 man advantage. Lessio, parked outside the crease, had an easy tap-in after taking the cross-ice feed from Daine Todd.

Then, just a minute later, Portland struck again on the power play, when Brisebois's slap shot through traffic fooled Pasquale between the legs to put the Pirates ahead by two.

Not finished there, the Pirates added another tally - this time from Louis, his first of the season - with under five minutes to play in the second frame. Wheeling into the IceCaps' zone, Louis cut towards the net before sending a wrister top shelf to bring Portland to the dressing room with a 5-2 lead.

The IceCaps responded quickly out of the gate in the third, however, answering the Pirates' three-goal second period with two goals of their own in the first five minutes. Albert got things going first at 2:54, when he took a behind-the-net pass from Jason Jaffray and one-timed it glove side. Less than two minutes later, the IceCaps stormed the Portland crease before Mouillierat finally batted in the loose disc under the pad of Domingue to make it 5-4, but that was as close as they would get.

The IceCaps look to take two-of-three against the Pirates, when the two clubs square up for the final game of their series Tuesday night (7:30 p.m. NT) at Mile One Centre.
