PORTLAND, ME - Mark Parrish scored a goal and two assists and Jhonas Enroth made 42 saves to lead the Portland Pirates to a 5-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers in an American Hockey League game played this afternoon in front of 2,621 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Nick Crawford, Paul Byron, Mark Mancari and Max Legault also scored for the Pirates, while Colin Stuart collected a pair of assists. Portland improved to 2-0 with the victory.
Jerome Samson netted the lone goal for Charlotte, now 1-2 on the season.
The Pirates netted the lone goal of the opening period as Parrish connected 1:28 into the game for a 1-0 Portland lead. Crawford, with his first career AHL goal, and Byron, shorthanded, lifted the Pirates to a 3-0 lead after two. Mancari made it 4-0 in the opening minute of the third and Legault, with the first of his career, five minutes later completed the Pirates scoring. Samson spoiled Enroth's shutout bid with 10 second in regulation.
The Checkers outshot the Pirates 43-25 in the game.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were all from the Pirates. Enroth was the first, Parrish the second and Crawford the third.
The Pirates get back at it with home games Friday and Saturday at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Friday the Pirates face the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in a 7 p.m. game.
