Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima Valley Pippins overcame an early 3-0 deficit, but were unable to complete the comeback in Saturday night's 4-3 loss in 12 innings against the Bend Elks on "Pink Is In Night" at Yakima County Stadium.
George Mendazona delivered a 2-out RBI single in the top of the 12th inning, the first run the Elks scored since posting a 3-run first inning, taking the lead for good. After not collecting a hit through the first four innings, the Pippins (9-4) ended up with 10 hits on the night, including a single from Jack Sandberg (San Diego) breaking up the no-hitter.
The Pippins would then rally for two runs in the 6th as Ryan Garcia (UCLA) drove in two runs on a 2-out RBI single, of his two hits on the night. Jack Sandberg would eventually tie the game, 3-3, in the 8th inning on a bases-loaded infield single.
The Pippins would strand 16 men on base Saturday night, including the bases loaded in the 8th and 10th innings. Christian Koss (UC Irvine) finished 1-6 at the plate, lining out to center field with two runners on base to end the ballgame, extending his hitting streak to six games.
Tanner Simpson (Columbia Basin CC) earned the start for the Pippins, allowing three runs on six hits in five innings of work. Matthew Fish (Lewis-Clark State College) threw one scoreless inning of relief while Josh Rios (Cal State Fullerton) and Andrew Bernstein (Cal Poly SLO), who threw 2.2 IP in his season debut, combined to pitch through the 9th inning. Connor Zwetsch (Oregon) pitched three frames of relief in extra innings, taking the loss.
Both teams return to Yakima County Stadium on Sunday night for Father's Day baseball with first pitch set for 5:05 p.m. Fans can listen to the action live on 1460 ESPN Yakima, the official home for Yakima Valley Pippins Baseball.
