Dayton Dragons News Release

Dragons outfielder slugs two homers, barely misses third, as Dragons go for series win Friday

Dayton, OH - If Jeremiah Piepkorn's bat got any hotter, it would have needed a barbeque grill. Piepkorn slugged two home runs Thursday night, leading the Dayton Dragons (47-64, 17-24) to a 10-5 rout over the Fort Wayne Wizards (54-57, 16-25) before a sellout crowd of 8,502 at Fifth Third Field.

The Dragons' big inning came before the seats could even get warm. Dayton piled on six runs in the first inning off Wizards starter Chris Steinborn (L, 1-3), sending 11 men to the plate. Piepkorn began the fracas with a three-run missle of a homer to left, putting the Dragons up 3-2. After a two-out walk to Bradley Key and infield single to Trevor Lawhorn, Jorge Mejia pushed the lead to 4-2 on an RBI single. Cody Strait then turned the inning into a slaughter with a two-run double to make it 6-2, chasing Steinborn after only one inning.

Piepkorn's second homer of the night in the second inning and a third inning RBI single by Adam Rosales helped back five consecutive shutout inning pinned together by the Dragons bullpen, where normal reliever Carlos Bohorquez (W, 2-3), in only his second start of 2005, picked up the victory with five innings of seven-hit ball, allowing two runs with no walks and six strikeouts.

Piepkorn barely missed his third homer of the night in the sixth inning, drilling a shot down the left field line that sliced foul by three feet, wide of the foul pole. Pipekorn then reached on an infield single, setting up Bradley Key's RBI double to spread the Dragons cushion to 9-1. A passed ball soon thereafter allowed Piepkorn to score from third, pushing across the final Dragons run of the night.

Fort Wayne's only lead of the night came in the first inning on consecutive RBI singles by Mike Baxter and Drew Davidson. It would be Bohorquez's longest inning of the night, where at one point, he retired the last eight of nine hitters faced.

The Wizards pushed across three late runs in the seventh and ninth off Aaron Garrison (ND) and James Morrison (ND), with the game already out of reach. Morrison slammed the door in the ninth, retiring the last two hitters faced after Peter Ciofrone's RBI single.

Piepkorn led the Dragons offense with a 3-for-5 night, collecting two homers, four RBI's and three runs. Ciofrone continues his recent hot tear with a 3-for-5 night for Fort Wayne, collecting an RBI and run scored.

The Dragons and Wizards finish the four game series Friday night at Fifth Third Field with a 7:00 P.M. first pitch. Righty Ramon Ramirez gets the ball for Dayton while Fort Wayne will counter with righthander Mike Ekstrom. The game can be heard on radio at ESPN Radio 1410-AM and on the Internet at www.daytondragons.com, with the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 pm.
