West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

Kown strong at start, bitten by rough inning

BELOIT, WI - Andrew Kown did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, but in the fifth, Beloit came up with all the offense it needed in a 5-2 win over the Whitecaps.

It was a relatively low-scoring game that followed back-to-back West Michigan victories in the first two games of the series by scores of 10-9 and 8-6.

The Snappers scored four times in the fifth. Their first hit of the game off Kown was a two-run home run by Trevor Plouffe that followed a lead-off walk issued to Jeremy Pickrel. Pickrel was only the second Snappers base runner of the game. Kown retired ten batters in a row before the walk to start the fifth.

Beloit's second pair of runs scored in large part thanks to a two-base throwing error by Wilkin Ramirez. The third baseman fielded a bunt by Javi Sanchez, but threw the ball down the right field line. Johnny Woodard, who also drew a walk from Kown, scored from first on the play. Sanchez picked up a hit and ended up at third. He crossed the plate three batters later on a single by Steve Tolleson.

West Michigan responded in the next half inning with a pair of runs. Jeff Frazier hit a no-out, RBI double to left for the first score. Frazier scored later in the inning on a ground ball hit by Josh Lee, which cut the lead to 4-2.

Kown allowed just three hits in six innings, but took the loss. Freddy Dolsi threw the final two innings and relief and allowed a two-out solo home run in the eighth to Pickrel that provided the final margin of victory.

Beloit starter Eddie Morlan threw 5.1 innings and gave up both Whitecaps runs, but only three hits to earn the victory.

J. P. Martinez, who blew a save opportunity against the Whitecaps on Wednesday, retired the last four West Michigan batters of the game to preserve the win.

The loss ended a three game winning streak overall for West Michigan and a season-high four game road winning streak.

End of the Runs: Whitecaps outfielder Clete Thomas went 0-for-4 to end an 11 game hitting streak. Teammate Jeff Frazier failed to hit a home run for the first time since Sunday, ending a streak of three games in a row, which was one shy of the team record.
