Rays offense comes alive in 10-2 victory

Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays all pitched in during a 10-2 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels Thursday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.
Every Devil Rays starter had at least one hit and scored one time. Fernando Perez hit a leadoff home run to start the game and the momentum never wavered after that. Perez ended the night with three RBI as did Shaun Cumberland.
The Kernels took a 1-0 lead off Rays starter Brandon Mann but the tide turned with Perez' home run in the bottom half. Southwest Michigan scored three times in each of the next three innings a 10-1 lead was built. Cedar Rapids scored one time off Tampa Bay 2005 second round draft pick Chris Mason in the sixth during his two innings for the last run. This was the first game the Devil Rays have scored at least 10 runs since a 10-3 win at Beloit on July 18. Rays manager Joe Szekely was ejected in the fourth inning after Travis Schlichting was hit by a pitch.
The Devil Rays, who are two games over .500 on the season for the first time in 2005, will go for their first four-game of the season on Friday night at C.O. Brown Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The national mascot GURU will be performing between innings for the fans. Southwest Michigan(23-18, 56-54) will start RHP Matt Larson against Kernels RHP Nick Green.
**Opening Day at the team's Club House Store in Lakeview Square Mall will be on Satuday, August 6. From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Rays infielder Patrick Cottrell and outfielder Patrick Breen will join the team's mascot Doodle and broadcaster Mike Wagenheim to sign autographs and give away door prizes**
