Elmira, NY- A run in the first and a pair of two out runs in the third inning provided the Elmira Pioneers with just enough offense to defeat the Les Capitales de Quebec for the second straight game on Sunday by a final of 4-2.
After the Capitales took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning the Pioneers answered with an RBI single from Yuji Nerei to plate Cleatus Davidson, tying the game at one. In third Elmira really got things going picking up a pair of runs with two down in the inning. Jeremy Dodson gave the Pio's a one run lead with an RBI single to score Rick Elder followed by an RBI single from Ronnie Deck to make it 3-1 Elmira.
In the top half of the seventh Quebec managed to make it a one run game on Shane Hopper's RBI groundout. But in the bottom of the seventh Elmira would re-up their lead to two as Dennis Abreu led the inning off with a solo homerun, his dinger in as many nights to make it 4-2.
In the ninth inning the Capitales threatened two outs. Buck McNabb hit a single of Julio LaSalle's shin followed by a double from Hopper. With two outs and runners on the corners LaSalle got the final out without any damage, getting Eddie Lantigua to fly out to Dodson in center.
On the hill Curt Borland got the win out of the bullpen allowing one run in three 1/3 innings of work, while LaSalle got the save, his first of the season.
