Northeast League recap

July 18, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

NEW JERSEY 4, BROCKTON 1

@ Brockton, Mass. Time: 3:13 ATT: 4,700

W: Aaron Myers (4-1) L: Derek Anderson (4-5) S: Fabricio Benitez (7)

HR: none

Brockton jumped out front early against New Jersey, but the Jackals would have the final say today, as they went on to beat the Rox 4-1. Brockton would score their lone run off of an RBI single from Brian Jones, giving them a 1-0 lead that would be erased promptly in the second by the Jackals. Juan Infante roped a two RBI triple in the second for the Jackals, capping off a three-run inning for New Jersey. The Jackals would add one more in the third, making it a 4-1 game. From there the scoring would be halted by magnificent pitching from both teams. Brockton's Derek Anderson retired 16 consecutive batters, and the Jackals' Aaron Myers responded by retiring 13 of 14 batters faced after the third. Myers finished the night after seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits, striking out seven to pick up his fourth win. Fabricio Benitez pitched a perfect ninth, picking up his second save in as many nights.

NORTH SHORE 4, ACES 1

@ Lynn, Mass. Time: 2:20 ATT: 4,526

W: Bryan Morse (6-2) L: Alex Pena (2-5) S: none

HR: NS – Marcos Agramonte (2), Rob Fischer (6)

The Aces failed to get much started on offense and, because of that, dropped their fifth straight game, falling 4-1 to the North Shore Spirit. The Spirit got on the board in the first, taking a 1-0 lead off of a Rob Fischer sac fly. They would add to that lead in the third and fifth with homeruns from Marcos Agramonte, a solo shot, and Fischer, a two-run shot, giving North Shore a 4-0 lead. It would stay that way until the Aces pulled out a run in the eighth as Greg Schmidt scored on a wild pitch after reaching third on a triple. Minus that minor blemish in the eighth, Spirit pitcher Bryan Morse pitched wonderfully, pitching the complete game, allowing just that one run while striking out six.

ELMIRA 4, QUEBEC 2

@ Elmira, N.Y. Time: 2:46 ATT: 1,537

W: Curt Borland (2-3) L: Danny Prata (3-3) S: Julio Lasalle (1)

HR: ELM – Dennis Abreu (2)

The first inning usually sets the tone of the game, today was no exception - both teams scored, but squandered good chances along the way. Quebec scored an unearned run off of an error, stranding a runner on second and Elmira scored aided by a wild pitch, but stranded runners on first and third. In the third, tied 1-1, Elmira managed to plate two runs on three hits, giving them a 3-1 lead over Les Capitales, but left the bases loaded as Dytarious Edwards popped out to end the inning. Elmira left eleven runners on base in the game, and Quebec stranded a remarkable twelve of its own. Facing a 3-1 deficit in the seventh, Quebec pulled within a run on a Shane Hopper RBI grounder, but Elmira would shut the door in the bottom half as Dennis Abreu hit his second homerun in as many games, giving the Pioneers a two run cushion, allowing Julio Lasalle to pick up his first save of the year in his first relief appearance.

NEW HAVEN COUNTY 2, BANGOR 1

@ West Haven, Conn. Time: 3:00 ATT: 1,074

W: Skip Wiley (3-4) L: Matt Scheuing (5-2) S: Shane Waroff (10)

HR: BAN – Donnie Ross (13) NHC – Darren Ciraco (2)

The Cutters' offense stayed at home for the second day in a row, however it didn't matter as the New Haven Pitchers combined to pitch a gem, allowing just one run on two hits and three walks. Starter Skip Wiley pitched seven strong innings, allowing the lone Bangor run on only two hits and a walk to pick up the win. His opponent, Matt Scheuing, was equally impressive, pitching seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks. All of the scoring was done on homeruns today, with Bangor's Donnie Ross jacking a solo shot in the first, giving Bangor a 1-0 lead before New Haven's Darren Ciraco answered in the fourth, drilling a two run shot off Scheuing to give the Cutters a 2-1 lead for good. Shane Waroff pitched the last inning and a third with just one Bangor player reaching base, off of a walk, to pick up his tenth save of the year.
