Pioneers Comeback for 4-3 Win in Finale of 3-game series

Thursday, July 25, 2002 - Dunn Field, Elmira, NY

Elmira rallied for 3-runs in the bottom of the 6th for a 4-3 win over the Berkshire Black Bears in front of 1684 fans at Dunn Field Thursday evening. Elmira won the season series over Berkshire 11 games to 1. The Pioneers are 9-4 in the 2nd half and 34-24 overall. Berkshire is in last place in the league at 3-8, 17-40.

Justin Stine (5-4) picked up his 4th win in his last 5 appearances to work his overall record into winning territory for the first time this season. Stine lasted 7.1ip allowing 5 hits and 3er with 3bb's and 5 K's.

Julio Perez closed it out in the bottom of the 9th for his league leading 14th save. Perez maintained his perfect 0.00 ERA through 21.2 innings this season. Pedro Quero went 3-for-3 including a 2-run double in the 6th that tied the game. Quero went onto to score the game-winning run shortly thereafter while Osmani Garcia was cuaght in a rundown between 1st and 2nd.

Manager Mitch Lyden was ejected in the bottom of the 3rd in an argument with 1B umpire Brad Hungerford.

LH Doug Dimma (0-2) threw well through the first 6 innings allowing just 1 unearned run but got touched for a 3 spot in the in the 7th.

Berkshire took the initial lead in the top of the 3rd with a single to LF by Scott Allen. Stine committed a balk advancing Allen to 2nd. After moving up on sac-bunt he scored on a Joe Kerrigan double to right-center.

The Pioneers tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the 3rd with Bobby Hill singling up the middle, stealing 2nd and scoring on a Ron Bush ground-ball that was booted at 3B by Kerrigan.

Michael Moore gave the Black a 3-1 lead in the top of the 6th with a 2-run HR to RF. He drove in Nelson Samboy who reached on a fielder's choice following a single by Kerrigan.

In the bottom of the 6th, Ron Bush hustled out a double up the middle as Curtis Goodwin was late getting to the ball in CF. Rafael Alvarez beat out a little tapper for an infield single. Pedro Quero tied the game with a 2-run double to right-center. Osmani Garcia then singled to LF and got caught between 1st and 2nd after a wide turn. Quero came into score the winning run while Berkshire focused on getting the out on Garcia at 2nd.

Julio Perez struck out 2 batters in the 9th. He allowed a walk and a hit but Kerrigan chopped out back to the pitcher to end the game.

Elmira opens a 3-game series with the Adirondack Lumberjacks with Jeff Andra (6-5) starting for the Pioneers Friday night at 7:05. Saturday night is WENY-TV and Copy Express Team Photo Night at 7:05 with Sean Brummett the slated starter.
