Nashua, NH - July 25, 2002 - The Atlantic City Surf (8-5 second half) defeated the Nashua Pride (0-14 second half) 4-2 before 1,971 fans at The Pridelands tonight. The Pride hoped that a Christmas in July promotion would change their unbelievable run of luck, but they extended their record breaking 19-game losing streak thanks to a 9th inning Surf rally that broke a 2-2 tie.
The Pride took a 1-0 lead when JOSE REYES walked to start off the second inning. PAT HOWELL was hit by a pitch, which advanced Reyes to second base. CHAD FONVILLE followed with a chopper to the right side of the infield, Surf first baseman JOSE VELASQUEZ gathered the ball and promptly committed a throwing error that allowed Reyes to score.
The Surf's RICK JOHNSON would score in the top of the fifth inning on a STEVE HINE single to tie the game at 1-1. The Surf would then take the lead when KEITH GORDON hit a solo homer to start off the sixth inning for a 2-1 lead.
The Pride tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning when FRANCISCO LEBRON singled to reach first. Lebron stole second and reached third on a passed ball. Lebron then scored on a passed ball to knot the game a 2-2.
Pride reliever MIKE WELCH (0-1), in his first game back with the Pride after a brief retirement, allowed a solo homer to GARRY MADDOX in the top of the ninth and an additional insurance run to take the loss. ANTHONY SHELBY earned the win in relief for the Surf to improve to 2-4 on the season.
The Pride will play the third game of a three game series against the Surf tomorrow night at The Pridelands beginning at 7:05. New Hampshire Lottery is sponsoring Lapel Pins to the first 1,000 fans. Plenty of great seats are still available by calling 883-BALL (2255) or visiting the Holman Stadium Box Office.
