Newark Bears News Release

Newark, NJ –Thursday, July 25, 2002 – The Newark Bears defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish by a score of 4-1 despite being out hit 8-3 in order to pick up their fifth straight win. David Moraga (9-3) earned his team leading ninth game of the season as Newark took advantage of a couple walks and a timely base hit off of Bluefish starter Masaru Imazeki (4-1).

Newark put three runs across the plate in the bottom of the third as PJ Williams drove home one and Jack Joffrion sent home two more. After Cesar Devarez drove home one for Bridgeport in the top of the fourth, Joffrion homered in the sixth to extend Newark's lead to 4-1.

Moraga departed after going six innings and allowing just the one run on seven hits and two walks. Alberto Castillo went the next 2.1 innings and only let up one hit, but did allow three walks before handing the ball over to Denny Bair who recorded his fourth save of the season.

Despite picking up the loss, Imazeki was impressive as he only allowed three hits, but those hits when combined with three walks were all Newark needed to get four runs across. Al Sontag and Mike Guilfoyle pitched the final two innings for Bridgeport, and neither allowed a hit.

The Newark Bears will play game three of this three game series with the Bridgeport Bluefish tomorrow evening at 6:35 pm. Not only will this game be another Alive at Five, but it will also be Glacier Mountain Diamond Dig Presented by Littman Jewelers.
