Pink hair in the rink
March 12, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release
Des Moines, IA- The number has been tallied and it is official - TWO Iowa Stars players will dye their hair pink for Saturday night's Pink in the Rink event. Rookie forwards Tommy Wandell and James Neal will both âgo pink' for the game on March 15th versus their division rivals, the Quad City Flames.
Wandell was the unofficial winner following Tuesday's win over the Lake Erie Monsters, which was the last chance for fans to make donations in each players' jar. Wednesday morning, a few of the Stars veterans decided to even the score by matching the donated amount to create a tie between Neal and Wandell.
The money donated by fans and players will benefit the John Stoddard Cancer Center at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Proceeds from the entire event will go towards the John Stoddard Breast Cancer Care Coordinator Program. For more information on this program or Stoddard, please visit www.johnstoddardcancer.org.
In addition to pink ice the Stars players will wear special pink and black jerseys that will be auctioned off their backs live on the ice following the night's matchup. Each fan that purchases a jersey will have their photograph taken on the ice with that player by the Stars official photographer, Trey Eason.
A silent auction featuring all sports memorabilia will take place on the concourse before and during the game. Items such as a Peyton Manning autographed jersey, a Kurt Warner autographed football, a Zach Johnson autographed 8x10 photo and a Brett Favre autographed jersey will be available for fans to bid on.*
Fans in attendance for Pink in the Rink will receive pink pen lights courtesy of John Stoddard to be used during a special intermission ceremony. Fans will also be given mammogram reminder cards to mail to their loved ones in order to promote breast cancer awareness.
KIOA Chuck-A-Puck is a second intermission tradition at the Iowa Stars games and on Saturday, March 15th the prizes and anticipation will be bigger and better than ever! For this one time event the Chuck-A-Puck prizes are super-sized and the price per puck will increase by $1. Prizes include the grand prize of a team autographed commemorative Pink in the Rink jersey, the same ones the players will be wearing for the game! The side prizes each include suite tickets for upcoming events at Wells Fargo Arena along with gift certificates to local restaurants.
