Newark Pilots News Release
The Newark Pilots (17-12) defeated the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs (8-20) by a final score of 10-7 in front of a crowd of over 1,700 fans at Colburn Park on Assemblyman Bob Oaks Night.
The win gives the Pilots the sweep of their home-and-home series against the DiamondDawgs, which began on Wednesday with a 7-2 win in Mohawk Valley.
Newark had jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the fifth inning. In the home half of the second, Willie Gabay (Herkimer County C.C.) loaded the bases after walking Greg Schworm (Finger Lakes C.C.). The Pilots took a two-run lead following Matt Vera's (San Joaquin Delta) RBI walk in the next at bat.
Ray Delvalle's (Kentucky Wesleyan) single to center field in the fourth scored two more runs, cushioning the Pilots lead. An error by the DiamondDawgs in the fifth allowed Chase Brown (UT Dallas) to score, giving Newark a 7-0 lead.
Mohawk Valley trimmed four runs off of the Pilots' lead in the top of the sixth. After loading the bases themselves, the DiamondDawgs received a three-run double from Michael Gunn (Christian Brothers H.S.) and cut the deficit to 7-4.
In the seventh, Brown crushed a ball to the wall in straightaway centerfield, and rounded third as the ball was hurled to catcher Bryan Bleakley (NJIT). The two collided and the ball was knocked free from the catcher's glove allowing Brown to score a rare inside-the-park homerun. The two- run homer extended the Newark lead to 9-5.
Hassan Evans (Herkimer County C.C.) hit a RBI triple followed by a RBI double from D.J. Hoagboon (Albany) and the DiamondDawgs trailed 10-7 in the eighth. Mark Scott (San Joaquin Delta) then took the mound for the four-out save, his sixth save of the season.
Dominick Ruscitti (Kutztown) pitched seven innings while improving to 4-0. Randy Villa (San Joaquin Delta) finished the game 4-for-5 and Brown recorded two hits, two runs and two RBI for the Pilots.
Gabay surrendered seven runs in five innings pitched and struck out a game-high six batters in the loss. Hoagboon was 3-for-4 and Gunn drove in three runs to lead Mohawk Valley.
The Newark Pilots, who lead the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League West Division, host the Glens Falls Golden Eagles both Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. At the same time, the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs return home for their two-game series against the Elmira Pioneers.
