Newark Pilots News Release
The Newark Pilots (2-1) earn their second come-from-behind win of the season Tuesday night in Albany by defeating the Dutchmen (1-3) 7-4.
Down 4-3 in the top of the seventh, the Pilots scored four runs to put the game out of Albany's reach. With Ray Delvalle (Kentucky Wesleyan) and Michael Bolling (Lewis) on first and second respectively, Newark first baseman Randy Villa (San Joaquin Delta) hit a two-run triple. Villa then crossed home on a fielding error. His college teammate Matt Vera (San Joaquin Delta) hit a RBI single to give Newark a 7-4 advantage.
The Pilots started with a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Chase Brown (UT-Dallas) hit home Kyle Barkley (Finger Lakes C.C.) and Delvalle. Albany starter Mike Hughes (Hudson Valley C.C.) gave up one more run in the top of the sixth as Newark jumped to a 3-0 lead.
The Dutchmen responded quickly in the bottom of the sixth. Newark reliever Matt Frahm (Lewis) founded himself in a bases-loaded jam with no outs. Garren Palmer (Georgia Southern) scored when Frahm walked Steve Anderson (Georgetown). Matt Wehrli (Yavapai) then scored two RBI's on a single. The fourth run of the frame scored on a sac fly from Brandon Trinkwon (UC Santa Barbara).
Justin D'Amato (St. John Fisher) struck out seven in five innings of work in his first start of the season for Newark. Frahm earned the win, allowing only one hit and fanning five. Both gave up two runs. Brown led the Pilots with three RBI's on two hits and also scored one run.
Hughes threw five and a third innings, giving up three earned runs, but C.J. Sohl was credited with the loss after he surrender three more runs in just one relief inning. Albany's Wehrli had a team-high two RBI's.
The Newark Pilots finish their road trip Wednesday at Mohawk Valley (2-2) at 10:30 a.m. Newark returns home to Colburn Park Friday for their home opener against Watertown (1-2) at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all Pilots' home games are on sale now at the Wegmans located on West Miller Street in Newark.
