Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (29-45) held off a late rally to top the Buffalo Bisons (34-39) by a score of 5-4 on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Field.
The Bisons used a four-run eighth to pull themselves within a run, but that was the closest they would get.
Pigs RHP Aaron Nola (2-0) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking one and fanning seven over 7.2 IP in his second career Triple-A start. LHP Adam Loewen (1.1 IP, 3 K) got the final four outs to notch his first save of the year.
In the top of the second, the IronPigs had runners on the corners with two away before Aaron Altherr stole second and Russ Canzler (2-3, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI, SB) stole home on a double steal to give the Pigs a 1-0 lead. Canzler had doubled to start the inning before moving to third on Altherr's single.
The Pigs had the bases loaded with two outs in the fifth before Canzler delivered a bases-clearing triple which gave Lehigh Valley a 4-0 advantage.
LHP Daniel Norris (1-7) was dealt the loss for the Bisons as he gave up four runs on eight hits to go along with a walk and nine strikeouts in six innings of work.
In the top of the seventh, Tyler Henson (1-4, SB, 2 R) reached via a one-out single, moved to second on a single, stole third and scored on Altherr's sac fly to extend the IronPigs lead to 5-0.
Buffalo cut the lead to 5-4 with four runs in the afore-mentioned eighth. Sean Ochinko delivered an RBI single in the frame, Melky Mesa grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that allowed a run to score and Matt Hague reached on an error by Brian Bogusevic in right field which plated a pair of runs.
Jordan Danks (2-4) and Edgar Duran (2-4, 2B, R) also had multi-hit games for Lehigh Valley.
The series wraps up on Thursday at 1:05 p.m. as LHP Anthony Vasquez (3-2, 3.16) takes the hill for the Pigs against Bisons LHP Matt Boyd (1-1, 2.25).
