Rochester Red Wings News Release
PAWTUCKET, RI - Humberto Quintero dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Quintin Berry in the 11th inning and the Pawtucket Red Sox beat the Rochester Red Wings 3-2 Wednesday night at McCoy Stadium.
The loss spoiled a nice comeback for the Red Wings (36-35) who were down to their final strike trailing by a run in the ninth but three straight singles by Reynaldo Rodriguez, Danny Ortiz and Jose Martinez tied the game.
Wings starter Taylor Rogers and PawSox (35-37) lefty Brian Johnson were stellar, both retiring the first nine men of the game before fourth-inning singles. Pawtucket finally broke through in the sixth on Berry's RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
Rochester answered in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Argenis Diaz started the inning by reaching on a throwing error by Johnson. Eric Fryer walked pushing Diaz to second base. Rodriguez struck out looking for the first out and Ortiz followed with a wild fielder's choice.
Ortiz chopped one to first baseman Luke Montz who fired to second forcing out Fryer but as the return throw came back to Montz, the pitcher Johnson sprinted to cover the bag and ended up running over Ortiz which prevented him from getting to the base. Obstruction was called allowing Ortiz to reach base and extended the inning while Johnson exited due to the collision. Martinez then tied the game with an RBI single against Pat Light.
Rogers started the seventh and surrendered two straight singles before a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Alex Meyer entered out of the bullpen and Pawtucket retook the look with a chopper towards third base that resulted in an RBI fielder's choice. Meyer stranded the other inherited runner to keep the game 3-2.
Rogers worked 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on five hits without a walk while striking out three.
Caleb Thielbar (4-3) yielded a single to start the 11th against Berry and he was immediately lifted for Lester Oliveros. Rusney Castillo executed a perfect bunt for a base hit. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one out, Humberto Quintero laid down a perfect bunt to score Berry.
Noe Ramirez (3-0) earned the win for the PawSox by working 2.0 scoreless innings with a walk and three strikeouts.
Rochester fell to 1-2 in extra-inning games, 10-16 in one-run games and 2-6 vs. Pawtucket this season.
