
Pierson OHL Commands Mound in Road Series Opener

SPRINGDALE, AR - Starting pitcher for the Wind Surge, Pierson Ohl, delivered the longest and best performance of the 2023 season when he pitched eight innings. He gave up an early run in the first but bounced back and kept the Naturals scoreless for the next seven innings. The Wind Surge defeated the Naturals 5-2 and lead the road series one game to none.
Wichita was able to score the first runs of the game in the top of the first inning. Alex Isola grounded out but was able to bring Yoyner Fajardo home for the first run. Seth Gray then hit a fly ball to left field that drove in a run as well.
The Naturals also scored in the first inning. Peyton Wilson hit an RBI single to second base to cut the Surge lead to one run.
The Wind Surge added another run to their lead in the top of the sixth. Dalton Shuffield hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Isola to reach home.
Fajardo hit his second hit of the game in the top of the seventh when he ripped a ball to right field for an RBI double. The Surge now had a three-run lead.
Willie Joe Garry Jr. hit his second triple of the ball game on a line drive to left field that scored another run for the Wind Surge in the top of the eighth.
The Naturals scored again in the bottom of the ninth off a wild pitch.
Ohl made his eighth start of the season on the mound for the Wichita Wind Surge. He pitched eight innings where he gave up one run off seven hits. He struck out four batters and walked none. He earned the win.
The starting pitcher for NW Arkansas was Mason Barnett. He pitched five innings and gave up two runs off four hits. He struck out seven batters and walked two more. He was credited with the loss.
The Wichita Wind Surge improve to (16-18, 44-58) and the NW Arkansas Naturals fall to (17-16, 46-56).
NOTES: Willie Joe Garry Jr. became the first Wind Surge player in franchise history to hit two triples in a ball game. Pierson Ohl was named Twins Minor League Pitcher of the week on Monday. The eight innings pitched by Pierson Ohl is the longest outing for a Wind Surge pitcher all season.
