SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Great pitching. Timely hitting. A close-scoring game. It must be playoff baseball.

The Sioux Falls Pheasants had all the right ingredients for a dramatic 2-1 win over the Lincoln Saltdogs on Tuesday night to take Game 1 of the North Division Finals. The series is a best-of-five format with the winner advancing to the championship series.

Beau Torbert demonstrated why he was named the league's Player of the Year. He broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning with a solo home run to right field for the 2-1 lead. It came off the first pitch of the inning against starter Jim Paduch. It was his only hit of the game.

The game featured two starting pitchers showing their best stuff. Pheasants starter Ben Moore struck out 10 batters and held the Lincoln Saltdogs to one run in seven innings of work. His only blemish was a solo home run yielded to Albenis Machado in the sixth inning.

Paduch (0-1) kept the Pheasants at bay through the first six innings, scattering five hits and striking out eight. The Pheasants tied the game in the bottom of the seventh without the aid of a hit. Three walks loaded the bases, and Reggie Abercrombie brought home Gus Milner with a sacrifice fly.

Moore left the game after the seventh inning, and Brandon Rapoza (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth to earn the victory. Aaron Cotter tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save, striking out Brandon Jones for the first out and Pat Trettel for the final out.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1, at Sioux Falls Stadium. Probable starters are Lincoln RHP John James against Sioux Falls LHP Chris Salberg.
