Pheasants Hold on for 12-11 Win in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, Iowa. - What started as a blowout turned into a nail-biter on Friday night, but the Sioux Falls Pheasants repelled a comeback attempt from the Sioux City Explorers for a 12-11 win.

The first-place Pheasants maintained a slim one-half game lead over the Wichita Wingnuts in the second-half division race. There are nine games remaining in the regular season. Sioux Falls' overall record improved to 57-30, best in the American Association.

Trailing 12-4, the Explorers scored three times in the eighth inning and Jacob Cruz hit a grand slam in the ninth inning to pull within one run before Aaron Cotter retired the final three batters for the win. The two teams combined for 23 runs, 31 hits and 17 walks.

Sioux City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Eddy Rodriguez doubled in Kevin Carby in the second inning to give the Pheasants a 2-1 lead in the second inning. Sioux Falls remained in the lead for the rest of the game. Eddy Rodriguez later drove in the Pheasants' final run in the seventh inning with a single, which was ultimately the difference in the game.

Pheasants starter Ryan Rodriguez (11-4) threw for six innings and allowed four runs - three earned - on 11 hits. The win ties him for the league lead. He walked six and struck out two.

Ryan Rodriguez was helped by Pheasants outfielders Hunter Jobes and Beau Torbert, who each threw out runners trying to score at home plate. The Explorers also stranded 15 runners on base.

Chad Povich (5-2) was touched for seven runs - six earned - on 10 hits in six innings. He walked a season-high seven batters and struck out three.

Brandon Sing was 3-for-4 with a double, and Hunter Jobes scored four runs. Joe Anthonsen and Tim Hutting also had multi-hit performances.

The I-29 Series against the Sioux City Explorers continues at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, August 20, in Sioux City. The game will be broadcast live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
