Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - For the second straight game, the Shreveport-Bossier Captains had a big early inning which held up late, as they scored six in the first inning on Friday night to beat their likely playoff opponent, the Pensacola Pelicans, 6-2 in front of a big crowd of 2,886 at Fair Grounds Field on Friday night.

On a night when the Captains (50-37, 21-19) 2nd half and Pelicans (46-42, 26-14) refrained from using smokeless tobacco products in memory of late Willis-Knighton trainer Jason Bland and also urged fans to not text message while driving in a promotion by radio station K-94.5 and Metro PCS, Shreveport-Bossier jumped all over Bryan Rembiz (4-4) in the first inning.

Bryan Sabatella led off with a single, and new addition Robert Perry was walked. Christopher Garcia and Palmer Karr were then each hit by a pitch to drive in one run, and Jorge Alvarez singled with one out to bring in two more. After another walk and a fielder's choice out at the plate, Jovanny Rosario smacked a bases-clearing triple to left-center to double the lead and give the Captains a 6-0 edge.

Rembisz and two Pensacola relievers did not allow a run after that, but it was more than enough for the Captains' 50th win of the season.

Captains starter Aaron Cunningham (1-2) got his first win in nine career starts with the club, pitching his second excellent game against Pensacola in a row. The lefty retired the first 10 men he faced, and did not give up a run until Javier Brito's solo home run with one out in the sixth. After giving up a leadoff single in the seventh, Cunningham got Carlos Leon to line out before turning things over to the bullpen.

Justin Young walked the first man he faced but got two outs to close out that inning, new trade acquisition Dan Griffin struck out the side in the eighth, and Mark Haynes gave up one run in a bit of a wild ninth inning to finish off the Pelicans.

Jameson Maj and Hector Carrasco then each pitched a scoreless inning to finish things off, getting Carrasco his 18th save of the year and DiPietro his first win since July 24.
